NHTSA Opens Investigation Into 1.2 Million Tesla Vehicles Over Suspension Defect

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles following complaints about a suspension issue that could compromise vehicle handling. The probe covers the 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y, according to a filing from the agency's Office of Defects Investigation. The NHTSA has received 156 complaints related to the detachment of the front lower lateral link. In most reported cases, the failure occurred without prior warning, though some drivers noted unusual noises before the incident. The agency's review will assess the scope and severity of the defect, which could potentially lead to a recall if a safety-related trend is confirmed.
