Alibaba, the Chinese technology conglomerate, has announced the release of what it describes as its largest and most advanced artificial intelligence model to date. The company asserts that the new model, named Qwen3.8-Max, delivers performance comparable to the best systems from American frontier labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as domestic competitors like Moonshot AI's Kimi K3.

In a blog post published on Monday, Alibaba stated that it is making Qwen3.8-Max widely available to users. The release was anticipated after the company previewed the model last month, during which it claimed the model was "second only to Fable 5," referring to Anthropic's flagship model.

The open release of another highly capable Chinese AI model adds to the already intense competition and tensions across multiple fronts in Silicon Valley and Washington. This move underscores the rapid advancements in AI technology coming from China and the growing global race for AI supremacy.
